Creme De Colorado Cookbook
Published in Paperback by Junior League of Denver (June, 1987)
Authors: Junior League of Denver, John Fielder, and Constance F. Graham
Average review score:

Imaginative & unusual enough to peak your interest
I bought this book as a souvenir on a trip to Colorado. Not only is it a great memento of a wonderful trip, I've just enjoyed flipping through it many times reading the recipes. The "Apple Salad" made with yogurt, cheese, raisins and nuts has brought rave reviews and demands for the recipe each time it's been served. Considering I prepared it twice for 130 people, I'd say it's a winner. This is a delightful book to own and to give as a present. A definite step above the traditional "community cookbook."

Our standard wedding gift
If we know you and you're married, we've probably sent you a copy of this book. It's a great wedding present--because it offers so many easy, yet creative and satisfying recipes. It's the best Junior League cookbook that this "foodie" has seen--even better than the other Junior League of Denver offerings. My personal favorites are the Szechwan Cashew Chicken, the Marinated Chicken Breasts in Pepper Sauce and the Angel Hair with Basil and Crab. I would note that the book is light on seafood recipes (it's from land-locked Colorado--duh!), but more than makes up for it with excellent poultry, pasta and salad offerings.

The BEST cookbook
I don't cook much. I don't like to cook. I don't cook well.

People always give me cookbooks "to help". I would try one or two recipes, but they were always mediocre or I would eventually make a recipe that tasted awful.

... and then I got this book. EVERY dish I've made from this book has gotten rave reviews and people photocopying my book. I've tried at least a dozen recipes and they are outstanding. It is the only cookbook I use.

Colorado Collage is THE best
This is the very best cookbook I own. My family has just loved every recipe we've tried. The instructions are great, and the recipes even better. A must have for your cookbook collection.

This is the cookbook we use over and over again.
This is the third time I have purchased this book for a friend. I actually borrowed my copy from my mother and she had to replace it because I just kept using it. The recipes are very creative and easy to follow. We have yet to make something that did not turn out. It is a must for entertaining. You won't be disappointed if you purchase this cookbook.

My favorite cookbook!
I bought this cookbook over five years ago, at the suggestion of a friend from Colorado (I live in Virginia). And although I have bought many more cookbooks since, I keep returning to the Colorado Collage. I have enjoyed and received many compliments on all the recipes I have tried from this book. The book has many positive points. First, the recipes are not difficult and the ingredients are not obscure. So, if you want to use this book to challenge yourself to see if you are the next Julia Child, then I would not bother. These are as close as you can get to no-fail/delicious recipes. Second, the book is very diverse and incorporates the fusion style. It presents standard fare with international flare. All the recipes are modern and exciting--no tuna molds from the 70's. Third, the book is great for entertaining because many recipes are easily doubled and tripled. Great appetizer section (alltime favorite ap, handsdown,--prosciutto wagonwheels). Fourth, the book gives generally healthy recipes--a few cream dishes, but not many. Fifth, the book has given me courage to explore and diverge from the strict letter of the recipe. The recipes are so good and basic, that even my occasional digressions have not ruined them. As stated by another reader, it's a great book for everyday and for special occasions. If I had to pick only one cookbook to own, this would be it.

The Life of a Lab

Authors: Denver Bryan and Thomas E. Donnall Jr.

Absolutely the best
As a lab owner, I was eager to see what this book had to offer. It is superb. The photos are gorgeous, perfectly showing every aspect of these wonderful animals. The text was just as good, perfectly complementing the photos. This is the best book I've seen on the breed and the most beautiful. A must have for any lab or animal lover.

This is a must have for lab lovers!!
I picked up this book while waiting in my doctor's office and immediately ordered a copy for myself. Denver Bryan is an outstanding photographer and depicts this beautiful breed in all possible scenarios, beginning from puppyhood to old age. I was smiling, laughing, and crying, all at the same time. The text, by E. Donnall Thomas Jr., describes these wonderful dogs, their antics, personalities, and the unconditional love they show for their owners. This one's a keeper!!

... well done ...
I've spent hours looking at pictures made by Denver Bryan and reading the words of E. Donnall Thomas Jr. ... This book and "Labs Afield" are 2 of the best photography books on Labradors I have found so far ... What can I say ... I don't like hunting but I think Labradors are wonderful ... and the collaboration between photographer & writer celebrates the breed in quite an exceptional way ... If hunting photographs don't disturb you, then this wonderful book will help anyone understand how special it is to have a Labrador as friend and companion ...

A great book for all year.
I purchased ALFIE online auctionit took me 3 tries to obtain it.It was well worth the time, moneyand wait. I have John on CD reading it and now to have the bookto go along with is a joy, my children grew up on John's music and they at a young age picked up on his concern for all living things, they have instilled in their children the same love of allthings and to take care not to harmany of God"s beauty he gave us to enjoy, and to pass them along unharmed and unchanged to futuregenerations. Great book read it and remember it.

Wonderfully touching work that stays close to the heart.
John Denver always seems know the right words. I read and reread this imaginative pieace of work and felt a true reminder of the meaning of Christmas. Thanks John!

Heartwarming, thought provoking message.
Love the book, Alfie the Christmas Tree. The message is simple, yet encourages all who read it to remember all living things during the Holiday Season. And I quote Mr. Denver,"Say a prayer for the Wind, and the Water, and the Wood, and those that live there too".

Great Cookbook for families
I grew up eating many meals made from this cook book! And now I use it for my own family. There are great recipes that are not difficult, not time consuming, and use all the basics you already have in your kitchen. Healthy cooking too! I like the Chicken Spagetti-great for potluck dinners!

The Best
I bought a second Colorado Cache as I have worn out the first book. Recipes are fantastic, especially the chicken salad.

great book
This is a good basic cook book, nothing fancy. The spices used are in your rack already. Super for people like me who like to cook but do not have time or experience for fancy cooking.

Colorado Wings: Four Inspirational Love Stories With a Dash of Intrigue
Published in Paperback by Barbour & Co (November, 2000)
Author: Tracie Peterson
Average review score:

Colorado Wings, an Excellent Read!
This book was excellent! All four stories are linked together beautifully, and when you finish one, you'll want to start the other. The mystery element was a nice, added touch. If you enjoy Tracie Peterson's work, you should NOT miss this novella collection. It's a must-read!

Wonderful!
I liked this as much as "Sunrise". Good read, but like 'em a little hotter like my newest favorite "Anything, my Love" by Cynthia Simmons.

Intrigue! Romance! Suspense! Heavy on Faith!!
Tracie Peterson takes the lives of some very interesting and prevocative people, separates them into four spell-binders, and then puts one cover on all! True to style, the author lets the reader learn all about the budding romances, the extreme disappointments, the rational and irractional fears and the final triumphs of faith!

Set in the Colorado Rockies, the love stories unfold slowly, entwined with tremendous complications of suspense, suspicion and subtle sub-stories.

The characters from story one continue over to story two and so on, just the lead changes. Tracie keeps the reader comfortable with glimpses from the previous stories as she unfolds the mysteries of the subsequent ones.

This 4-story book is not only romance, it is faith in God and faith and trust in other people at its best!

Kudos again Tracie!

Herrenrasse
Published in Unknown Binding by Spes in Deo Publications (1994)
Author: J. Malcolm Martin
Average review score:

Great action and suspense and beautifully written
This is fiction in a true life mystery setting that is scary; Vietnamese immigrants oppressed and murdered by modern Nazis. The action starts in Chapter 1 and continues throughout with an exciting and suspensful ending. The story flows and the book, once started, is hard to put down.

A nightmare that leaves you cold.
This book seems so real that whenever I go through Denver, I look sideways at all those normal people and wonder. You can't but like the FBI agent T.K. MacNaughton -- for the first time in a thriller, the FBI agent isn't some hard-a creep pushing his weight around. This character has a heart and it gets broken. But for all the horror, this is a story of hope. Do we have to keep killing our kids? Do we have to keep killing our future? All for ideologies that twist into hatred. Incredible book!

More than a mystery/thriller, this hits you in the heart
Despite Amazon.com saying it is out of print, Herrenrasse is indeed available (Spies in Deo Publ. at $22.50, Montrose, CO 81401-8713). The book begins with a nightmare and ends with hope. It is based on actual skinhead and extremist activities in the Denver metro area in the late 1980s and early 1990's: "slamming," murder of traitors, murder of innocents just because they are in the path of hate-filled people. The author's association with extremists and anti-government groups, as well as government agents, makes this novel more than real. The center of the story isn't the murder, kidnapping and tagedies, but the courage of the people who face them. A great book!

Think Like a Champion

Building success one victory at a time.
I have heard this advice before: If you want to be successful
at something, find the most successful person you can in that area, listen to what they say, and try to follow it. Well, its hard to imagine a football coach more sucessful than Mike Shanahan. Here's a guy who started with a dream: to be a head football coach, started as an unpaid volunteer for a college team, and worked his way to be one of the best, most respected, coaches in the NFL (winning 2 consecutive Superbowls) at a young age.

The great thing is, he has written a book that is designed to help people win beyond football, in any area of life. Shanahan breaks it down for you: the way he prepares, some struggles he's had, some ways he motivates people (including the little things that we learn are so critical), very good wisdom concerning life, and a lot more. Also very critical is the fact that this book is very easy to read and understand.

You even get a bonus section in each chapter written by some of the greatest people and minds in football: Paul Tagliabue, Jerry Rice, Bill Walsh, John Elway, Deion Sanders, Steve Young, George Seifert, Joe Montana, Marcus Allen, Al Michaels, and more. They give their own take on the subject being discussed in the chapter, which is not only informative, but like the book itself, filled with wisdom.

The chapters consist of 16 basic areas to focus on to become successful, things like: Preparing (all of life is preparation, and not preparing is preparing to fail), Sacrificing (don't expect to get anything good done without sacrifice, if it was easy, everyone would do it), Learning (without learning, you will be hopelessly stuck where you are), Detailing (the devil is definitely in the details and that's where things often break down). This is just a taste of the wisdom in this book. Highly recommended for people looking to improve themselves.

What a Success Story! Motivational!
A die-hard Broncos fan from the days dying watching those ridiculous striped socks and watching Fran Tripuka get killed, what a job Shanahan did turning it around into two Super Bowls in a row.

Learning of his background and his principles makes me now not only a more avid Bronco fan, but also a Shanahan fan as well. His perseverance from the days of his kidney injury to how he became part of Sooner coaching staff till today is truly one of principles of success through hard work, not gifts or who you know or any of the other myths most people who never get anywhere fall for and are unmotivated. Most of them just don't ever want to work hard at anything, but have it handed to them. Shanahan disproves all that bunk and shows how it came to be. Unbelievable that when given the Raiders head-job, didn't even have the downpayment for a house.

This guy is very endearing to so many of us who never had the backgrounds for those connections, but wanting something bad enough, and always believing it, achieve it one goal at a time.

Great advice, especially appreciate his concern for balance.

Excellent read. Thanks, Mike, from a new fan and admirer.

"...if you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail."
Straight-forward, crisply articulated and with practically no unnecessary fluff, Mike Shanahan's book, "Think Like a Champion," compellingly argues that the game of life is basically won or lost before the "players" take the field. Shanahan asserts his point of view over sixteen easy-to-digest chapters (each about ten pages or less) on the diffent tenets of becoming the best at what you do.

What I liked about this book is that while the author culls specific examples from his football career, the "moral of the story" is clearly applicable to ANYONE seeking to become the best in any endeavor. Offering an excellent, enjoyable read to both sports enthusiasts and non enthusiasts alike, the author's writing style is to neither excessively arm-wave nor make unsupported generalizations.

In fact, part of the Shanahan's credibility here is in his willingness to name names when providing examples of people living up to a credo espoused in a given chapter or more dramatically, falling short.

Written with humility, Shanahan's book leaves the reader feeling that there is nothing magical to becoming a huge success -- other than having a plan and putting in the blood, sweat and tears required to make that plan a success. Or as the author concludes, citing legendary coach Vince Lobardi, "Your quality of life is in direct proportion to your commitment to excellence." So true.

Arch of Triumph
Published in Unknown Binding by ()
Authors: Erich Maria Remarque, Denver Lindley, and Walter Sorell
Average review score:

Good but not thrilling
I saw the movie with Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer, and found it incredibly dull. I thought maybe the book would be better. I was right, it was better, but it didn't thrill me or really move me the way All Quiet on the Western Front did. I am not sure if this is partly due to the fact that I read it when I was a bit tired.

I don't really have a lot to say. It's not a book that I can enthusiastically applaud, but I won't say it was horrible. I would advise you to just read it for yourself and decide whether you like it or not! : )

Remarque at his best!
This is not intended for those of you who have never heard of Erich Maria Remarque. For the unfortunate ones who haven't come across any of his books, or were forced to read "All Quiet On The Western Front" as a homework assignment, you have been deprived of one of the greatest authors of the 20th century. After attaining any acknowlegement for any written work, writters tend to shift toward the more abstract and try to write something more profound then any of us 'Pleasure Readers' ever intended on reading. Remraque stays true to his roots, whether it is "Three Commrades", or this, "Arch Of Triumph", he keeps the balance between constructive conversation, 'page turning' story telling, and poetic descriptions that will forever be imprinted in our minds. Arch of Triumph is set in Paris during the late 1930's. Europe was on the road to recovering from the first Warld War and lurking was the air of the 2nd. Germans opossed to the new political views that ruled Germany fled anywhere refuge could be found. Ravic once an accomplished surgeon in Germany found himself in Paris, with no visa or passport. As an illegal refugee he had no rights to practice his profession in France and was forced to work underground performing surgeries illegaly. Paris, synonomous with elegance, good food, brothels, love,(at least in fiction) is described so beautifully in the eyes of Ravic that by the middle of the book I can swear I've been to Paris. Love, friendship, danger, philosophy they all have their places in this book. Without giving away too much I will cut it here and urge anyone who appreciates any of the above topics to read this book and find bliss in humanity and its simplicity put into words.

One of the best books I've ever read
'Arch of Triumph' is a book which becomes your friend, and you want to read it again, and each time you are discovering something else. It makes you think about what is really important in life, and at the same time it is a story about war, love, trust, friendship, humanity ...

A Long Reach: A Streeter Mystery (Viking Mystery Suspense)
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (February, 1997)
Author: Michael Stone
Average review score:

Good stuff!
The promise that author Stone showed in The Low End of Nowhere is delivered in this second book of the series. While a key plot point is telegraphed fairly early on, the author uses this to his advantage and delivers some nicely unexpected twists. This time out, the characters stand solid in their own right and in the climactic scenes of this book Stone lets his sense of humor loose, with the result that there are some hilarious, laugh-out-loud moments. It's always rewarding when a writer finds his stride and takes off. I'm looking forward to the other books in the series--which are already waiting for me in the small mountain of bedside reading.
Highly recommended.

Poignant and spiritual. Really captures the mood.
This book (and the rest of the Streeter Mysteries) are captivating with a rough appeal. The rawness of the lead character, Streeter, makes you scared of him, yet leaves you wanting to now more about him. Stone does an excellent job with the story line that will keep you in suspense until the very end. Can't wait for more of them. If you love a good mystery, look no further.

Hooked from the beginning
The first 2 sentences of this book hooked me. "Merton"Buddy" Hinckley wouldn't tell you the truth if you set his hair on fire. As a small- time contractor, he treated his customers like lice, and he had more process servers after him than both Clintons combined." Move over, Raymond Chandler. Read this in one sitting. Even though I hated the ex-girl friend and hoped she'd get iced or at least didn't care, Stone makes you care about the story. It moves fast and has interesting characters. The final "show-down" is hilarious; this should be a movie. I plan to read all the Streeter books.
